Program Description |

Because of the nature of translator training, students have access to a wide spectrum of the faculty of the Spanish and Portuguese Department. The specific translation courses are taught by native speakers of the target language who are practicing translators. Special guest lecturers from the practicing community often participate in practical exercises and activities. The Spanish Translation major provides pre-professional training in the theory and practice of translation and interpretation both for students planning to translate professionally and for students wishing to add translation and/or interpretation as an ancillary skill.
Core classes - 21 hours - Spanish 321 3rd year Grammar and Composition - Spanish 322 3rd year Grammar and Stylistics (pre-requisite Sp. 321) - Spanish 339 Introduction to Spanish Literature - Spanish 345 Iberian Civilization - Spanish 355 Ibero-American Civilization - Spanish 425 Structure of the Spanish Language - Spanish 441 Survey of Spanish Literature - Spanish 451 Survey of Hispanic-American Literature - Translation classes - 12 hours, which must be taken in sequence - Spanish 415 A&B Beginning Translation/Interpretation - Spanish 416 A&B Beginning Translation/Interpretation II - Spanish 417 A&B Translation/Interpretation I - Spanish 418 Translation/Interpretation II - Sr. Project

speakers of the target language, the language and
translation courses at the Brigham Young University
are a good choice for those wishing to specialize in
these languages. A con is that there is only a
translation course for the Spanish language. |
